As spring starts to bloom, many operations will be welcoming new delivery drivers just starting their professional careers. Here are some tips to help set them up for success.
Being a new auto parts delivery driver can be an exciting and rewarding job. Here are some tips to help your new driver get started and succeed.
Make sure they know your delivery area and how to use any GPS and technology tools you use. Do not take “Yes” for an answer when you ask if they know how to get around and use these tools; make sure they know how.
Give them pointers on staying organized and calm under pressure – checking schedules, ensuring paperwork is in order and that orders are loaded. Also, double-check that all items set for delivery are dropped off at the shops that ordered them. (Yes, sometimes small items can get missed).
Ensure that drivers know how to clearly communicate with dispatch, and how to do so safely; hands-free mobile device usage is critical to safety.
More than any other team member, delivery drivers are the “face” of any jobber operation. Emphasize and reinforce this important role in your communication, as a positive message.
If you don’t offer a uniform, emphasize the importance of dressing in a presentable, professional way.
Ensure that both you and your driver continually put safety first, ahead of speed of delivery. Make sure drivers understand how important this is to your expectations of how they do their job.
Make sure they know how to stay alert and feeling good on the job; keep water and healthy snacks handy.
Let them know it’s important to take an active interest in the condition of their delivery vehicle. Do a daily walkaround and report any noises or malfunctions; you really don’t want to be the parts delivery driver stranded roadside for everyone in town to see!
Some new drivers will be just looking for a summer job, but let them know what your company and the industry can offer beyond this role. The aftermarket is filled with professionals whose first job in the industry was behind the wheel. Today’s delivery driver may be a future leader.
