ABS Friction goes on the auction block

ABS Friction, which for almost 30 years manufactured premium Canadian-made brake pads supplying major private labels and its own brands–IDEAL Brake Parts and SILENCER Friction–goes on the auction block this week.

The Guelph, Ontario company was co-founded in 1995 by Rick Jamieson, Ralph Neil and Joe Schmidt, was acquired by American Remanufacturers Inc. in 2000 and repurchased by Rick Jamieson in 2005.

According to Jamieson, while the business continued to enjoy a degree of success, the prospects of being able to scale up to the level required in an evolving global marketplace was a question when the decision was made in mid-2024 to put the business up for auction.

For his part, Jamieson says he’s looking to semi-retire and throw himself into a number of activities and business ventures outside of the aftermarket.

ABS leaves behind a legacy of innovation, achieving the first copper free brake pad registration for the Leaf Mark, and regularly pushing the industry to produce more environmentally friendly products as well as to police products that did not meet expected and regulated standards.

The company exported to over 20 countries.

ABS is auctioning its complete 100,000 sq foot manufacturing and distribution facility – Presses, tooling, production and distribution assets, an extensive inventory of raw materials and finished goods.  There are 25,000 sets of finished brake pads and 20,000 sets of brake shoes to liquidate.

It is also looking to sell intellectual property (trademarks, brands, formulations) on a negotiated basis.
